Parent & Family Orientation!
Parent & Family Orientation is a vital step in supporting your University of Utah student. The Office of Orientation & Transition offers Parent & Family Orientation programming during all first-year New Student Orientaiton sessions for fall semester. The program is run concurrently with New Student Orientation, but is a separate program to meet the specific needs of parents and families.
Orientation offers the opportunity for parents and other support members to:
- Meet other families of Utah students
- Learn about the University from staff and administrators
- Interact with Orientation Leaders--current Student Leaders who are experts on everything the University of Utah has to offer
- Ask questions to truly understand the campus and how to support a University of Utah student
Sessions for family members are designed to provide the foundation for support throughout the student’s time at the University.

Registering for Parent & Family Orientation
Parents and family members can be added to a student's registration for a cost of $60 per person. When the student selects a New Student Orientation date, they will be prompted to add any guests. Parent & Family Orientation runs concurrently with the student program (two days) but the sessions are separate and designed specifically for family members. Once registered, guests will receive their own confirmation email with more details.
Students and family members will both check-in on Day 1 of their session starting at 8:00am in the University Union. Parent & Family Orientation will formally conclude on Day Two around 11:30am, and there are optional sessions for the afternoon.
Overnight accommodations on campus for guests are not provided through Parent & Family Orientation. Please visit the University Guest House for information about staying with us. Please note that students are given overnight rooms, and are expected to stay on campus.
What Parents are saying about Orientation!
“The Parent Orientation was wonderful and eased a lot of the anxiety we were having. The entire experience was positive and the people who worked at the campus, both students and staff, were exceptionally nice and welcoming.”
“The Parent focused orientation sessions were great and met my needs, and then some. There are so many resources for my student; I hope he will utilize them.”
“The explanation of services available was excellent. I also appreciated the many opportunities to ask questions. Kudos to those who organized the event; it was exceptionally well done.”
“I thought the Orientation was an excellent program, and although I thought my son would just tolerate it, he actually met some friends there and is even more excited about school now than he was. For him, making friends isn't always easy, but I felt like I watched him grow up before my eyes just during the orientation. I'm looking forward to the challenges and opportunities he'll get while attending the U of U.”
“It was a great process, for both the students and the parents, it really helped us to prepare for the start of school, and the entire school career for my daughter.”
"I was really impressed with the Orientation! The presenters were very prepared and gave valuable information. The OLs were amazing!"
“Well done! I am so glad we were able to attend. This orientation opportunity was well worth the trip to learn all we could and explore the campus and surrounding area.”
“Well organized. Highly recommend, especially for out-of-state families.”
